Instead of taking the elevator or the stairs to my class on the roof, I flew. I wasnât the first one there. In fact, everyone else was already there and talking to a new angel. She had bubblegum pink hair with matching wings, except the edges which were black.
Jax saw me and waved.
I returned it, glad he really wanted us to get to know one another.
The woman noticed and straightened, coming toward me. âYou must be Alice,â she said. âIâm Aaryn Grinson, your new teacher.â
âItâs nice to meet you,â I said, trying to ignore how she gawked at my wings.
âI heard about them but had to see for myself,â she said, her voice wispy. âThey are lovely,â she added, licking her pink lips.
âThank you.â I tucked my hands into my pockets, feeling self-conscious. In one swift motion, I noticed the rest of the class was staring at me too.
Take a picture, it lasts longer, I thought.
Faith snickered.
âThis morning, I will be testing you for speed and agility,â Aaryn began, speaking to the group as she walked over to a silver line pulsing near the opposite edge of the building. âYou will start here and fly, following the holographic barrier between the Protestas land and the archangel land until you reach Grace Mountain. There, you will pick up a flag and then return to this point. The first one back will be the team leader for the mission will be going on this afternoon.â Her light pink eyes met each of ours. âAre there any questions?â
No one said anything.
âGreat. Everyone line up.â
Veronica, Leia, Thomas, and Jax went over and took their places behind the line. I followed but wondered if we were ever going to do any book work. I really wanted to know why I had golden wings and what precisely that meant.
âGet set,â Aaryn barked.
I glanced back at my new teacher. She gave me a quick wink. âGo!â
Jax and Veronica were the first in the air, followed by Leia and Thomas.
Flap those golden wings, Faith hollered into my mind. Hurry! Losing sucks.
Iâm going. I stepped forward, stumbling slightly. For some reason, I was nervous. Thankfully, after yesterdayâs practice, my wings knew what to do and lifted me into the air.
The direction Kade flew me yesterday was opposite to the way we were going today. For that reason, I was hesitant though the holographic trees were like the other barrier. The land around us was different. The archangel building on the left had a bright silver hue to them while the buildings on the protestas side were strictly white. Iâd seen some of that region yesterday as well. The archangel district was so different. Opulent was the word that came to mind, and lush was another. Exquisite flowing gardens surrounded each building with angelic water features. Each building had its own park. There was a central location with silver streets and shining dining establishments without a roof so that a customer could fly in or out. Beyond the center street were more buildings followed by forest, and then what I guessed were the Lava Falls.
